The stairs are not abnormally narrow but certainly not as wide as a staircase would be in a new house. Also, they are more steep than you would normally see in a new office or a new house. If you’re on crutches, this might not be the best apartment for you to rent. It’s an old house. Every once in a while, I’ll find a 115 year-old piece of wood that’s starting to splinter or maybe a floor tack is exposed. As long as you are familiar with the quirkiness of old homes, you’ll be fine. Please add to the reservation all people who will be in the apartment during your stay. Outside guests are not allowed without prior approval and will be charged for the visit if not approved. Radiator heat from the bottom 2 floors tend to warm the apartment but there’s space heaters available for when it’s really cold out. There is no central AC but plenty of fans and window AC units. Sometimes the window air-conditioning units will already be set up installed in the windows, and sometimes they will be stored in the closet. Please note, because Michigan temperatures change so frequently, guests will often take the AC units out easily then put them back in - it’s a simple process. If you are not comfortable with rearranging furniture or window air-conditioning units yourself, this might not be the best apartment for you. As with the fold out couch, guests will have the freedom to rearrange and configure the apartment as if it was their own home. Before you check out, please just move everything back the way you found it. Yet another reason I don’t charge a cleaning fee. Just treat it like it is your own home. The apartment is the in-laws suite (formally known as maid and servants quarters) in my home. You’ll have full privacy but try to keep it somewhat quiet at night as there in may be others who sleep downstairs. The best way to do this is to remove your shoes before you walk up the stairs. Without shoes, nearly no noise will travel thru the house. If you require total silence for sleeping, I provide ear plugs, and I can also assist you in setting up a free white nice app on a smart device. If you’re not familiar with Michigan, sometimes, though seldom, you will find the random ladybug, stinkbug, or boxelder. There will be no insects in the apartment which have the ability to bite you :) Even the stinkbug only eats fruit, not people. If you have severe dog allergies, message me first before booking. With any quirky old home little nooks and crannies like the baseboard heaters, and the eaves are likely to collect dust in the little crevices that the stink bugs love. If you are the type of person who is expecting a hotel level of cleanliness, please do not book. Renting this apartment is like being a guest in a friend’s home. Please leave it the way you found it. There are ample cleaning supplies, 2 vacuums, and everything you need to save on not paying a typical cleaning fee. I only charge a $15 laundry cleaning fee so please scrub and sanitize up before you leave. Thanks! The space THE ROOM M4 is a bright, compact private room tucked into a corner of the second floor of our century-old Detroit home. Windows on multiple sides bring in lots of natural light and give this small room a distinctive, airy feel. It's normally configured for one guest with a single memory-foam bed and desk/table, along with a mini fridge, microwave, fast WiFi, digital bedroom lock, central boiler heat and window AC. For two guests, we can add a second single bed upon request. The desk/table is removed to make room for the second bed, creating a cozy but functional two-person setup. Storage is limited, so M4 works best for guests who travel relatively light. Your bedroom and bathroom are completely private. SHARED HOME This is our lived-in family home, which we share with our young son and guests from around the world. M4 gives you the privacy of your own bedroom and bathroom while the home's common spaces and amenities remain shared. Common spaces available to you include the full kitchen, ground-floor lobby/living area, laundry area, garden and outdoor area. Outside, we're continually developing our urban homestead, where we grow vegetables, herbs and other seasonal produce. Guests are welcome to enjoy the garden and outdoor area, including picnic tables for eating, working or relaxing outside. A HOME WITH HISTORY Our century-old Detroit home has had several lives. Built in the 1920s, it became a podiatric teaching hospital in the 1950s, where more than 2,200 podiatrists attended surgical training programs. After the hospital closed, the building eventually returned to residential use. Today we're continuing its story as our family home, restoration project and urban homestead while welcoming guests from around the world. Parts of this old house continue to evolve as we restore and improve it. If you're curious about the house or its history, just ask. We're always happy to share what we know. WHAT TO EXPECT M4's appeal is its unusual combination of a compact, light-filled corner bedroom and a surprisingly generous private bathroom. It's especially well suited to solo travelers who don't need a large bedroom but value their own bathroom, a workspace and lots of natural light. It can also accommodate two guests with the optional second single bed. In the two-bed configuration, the desk/table is removed and the bedroom becomes quite cozy, so we recommend reviewing the photos and room setup carefully if booking for two. LOCATION HIGHLIGHTS One of the best things about our location is how close we are to some of Detroit's favorite destinations. We're just 2 miles from Downtown, 2 miles to Eastern Market and 1 mile to Belle Isle and the Detroit Riverwalk, with easy access to many of the city's east-side neighborhoods. Belle Isle is Detroit's beautiful island park in the Detroit River, while historic Eastern Market is one of the city's best destinations for food, markets, local businesses and exploring. We're always happy to share recommendations. DETROIT & OUR NEIGHBORHOOD If you're new to Detroit, the city can look different from places you've visited before. Decades of population loss left many homes vacant, and thousands were eventually demolished. The remnants of that history are still visible throughout the city. Today there's tremendous energy going into restoring Detroit's historic homes. In our part of the city, you'll see beautifully renovated houses, active restoration projects, vacant lots and older homes still waiting to be brought back to life, sometimes all on the same street. For first-time visitors, that contrast can be surprising or even look intimidating, so we want guests to know what to expect. We're near Detroit's historic Grand Boulevard, a distinctive parkway created during an era of rapid growth to encircle what was then the city. Our part of Detroit has also been home to a remarkable mix of people, from world-famous musicians and TV personalities to influential civil rights leaders. Jack White has a house in nearby Indian Village, and legendary Detroit activist and philosopher Grace Lee Boggs also made this part of the city her home. We've lived in Detroit since 2013 and have spent much of that time restoring old houses ourselves. We're enthusiastic about the energy going into bringing Detroit's neighborhoods and historic buildings back to life, and we're proud to contribute in our own small way. We also want to be transparent: you'll see vacant lots, unrestored homes and occasional blighted properties in the surrounding area. Their appearance can be surprising if you've never visited Detroit before, but they're also part of a city undergoing an extraordinary period of reinvestment and restoration. The bathroom is surprisingly spacious relative to the bedroom, and the unusually high ceiling over the shower gives it a distinctive, airy character. PARKING Free street parking is available on the surrounding streets. As with street parking in any major city, we recommend removing valuables from your vehicle and using an anti-theft device. CLUB steering-wheel locks are available to rent for $1 per day. FOOD & GROCERY DELIVERY Detroit has lots of restaurant delivery options through Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub, including many great local spots. For groceries, we generally recommend delivery. Instacart and store delivery services make it easy to order from Meijer, ALDI, Kroger, Walmart and other area stores. If you'd rather shop in person, our favorite nearby full grocery store is Rivertown Market by Meijer, about 3 miles away. It has fresh produce, prepared foods, groceries and everyday essentials. For a few basics, there's also a small neighborhood market within easy walking distance. It's more of a liquor/convenience store than a full grocery store. One tip: online searches may suggest a different full grocery store as one of the closest options. Based on our local experience, we recommend Rivertown Market instead, or grocery delivery if you don't have a car. Guests are welcome to enjoy the garden and outdoor area, including picnic tables for eating, working or relaxing outside. A HOME WITH HISTORY Our century-old Detroit home has had several lives. Built in the 1920s, it became a podiatric teaching hospital in the 1950s, where more than 2,200 podiatrists attended surgical training programs. After the hospital closed, the building eventually returned to residential use. Today we're continuing its story as our family home, restoration project and urban homestead while welcoming guests from around the world. Parts of this old house continue to evolve as we restore and improve it. If you're curious about the house or its history, just ask. We're always happy to share what we know. LOCATION HIGHLIGHTS One of the best things about our location is how close we are to some of Detroit's favorite destinations. We're just 2 miles from Downtown, 2 miles to Eastern Market and 1 mile to Belle Isle and the Detroit Riverwalk, with easy access to many of the city's east-side neighborhoods. Belle Isle is Detroit's beautiful island park in the Detroit River, while historic Eastern Market is one of the city's best destinations for food, markets, local businesses and exploring. We're always happy to share recommendations. DETROIT & OUR NEIGHBORHOOD If you're new to Detroit, the city can look different from places you've visited before. Decades of population loss left many homes vacant, and thousands were eventually demolished. The remnants of that history are still visible throughout the city. Today there's tremendous energy going into restoring Detroit's historic homes. In our part of the city, you'll see beautifully renovated houses, active restoration projects, vacant lots and older homes still waiting to be brought back to life, sometimes all on the same street. For first-time visitors, that contrast can be surprising or even look intimidating, so we want guests to know what to expect. We're near Detroit's historic Grand Boulevard, a distinctive parkway created during an era of rapid growth to encircle what was then the city. Our part of Detroit has also been home to a remarkable mix of people, from world-famous musicians and TV personalities to influential civil rights leaders. Jack White has a house in nearby Indian Village, and legendary Detroit activist and philosopher Grace Lee Boggs also made this part of the city her home. We've lived in Detroit since 2013 and have spent much of that time restoring old houses ourselves. We're enthusiastic about the energy going into bringing Detroit's neighborhoods and historic buildings back to life, and we're happy to contribute to this endeavor. We also want to be transparent: you'll see vacant lots, unrestored homes and occasional blighted properties in the surrounding area. Their appearance can be surprising if you've never visited Detroit before, but they're also part of a city undergoing an extraordinary period of reinvestment and restoration. PARKING Free street parking is available on the surrounding streets. As with street parking in any major city, we recommend removing valuables from your vehicle and using an anti-theft device. CLUB steering-wheel locks are available to rent for $1 per day. FOOD & GROCERY DELIVERY Detroit has lots of restaurant delivery options through Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub, including many great local spots. For groceries, we generally recommend delivery. Instacart and store delivery services make it easy to order from Meijer, ALDI, Kroger, Walmart and other area stores. If you'd rather shop in person, our favorite nearby full grocery store is Rivertown Market by Meijer, about 3 miles away. It has fresh produce, prepared foods, groceries and everyday essentials. For a few basics, there's also a small neighborhood market within easy walking distance. It's more of a liquor/convenience store than a full grocery store. One tip: online searches may suggest a different full grocery store as one of the closest options. Based on our local experience, we recommend Rivertown Market instead, or grocery delivery if you don't have a car.
