The upstairs living and dining open to full Lake Superior views - relax and take it all in. The owners enjoy spending time here with their kids and dogs and hope you do the same. The space Tamarack House provides a wonderful place to relax & take in the big lake, or can be a good base for exploring inland hikes and canoeing - ideally a bit of both! The house is equipped with board games & puzzles, art supplies for kids, books for adults & kids & two TVs with Roku’s for access to streaming services. Outside your door there is a beach for all your stone throwing needs. A fire pit is nestled along the shore to take in sunsets and enjoy the scenery. Adequate firewood is provided. The Arrowhead Trail, which has access to pristine inland lakes is just a couple miles down Hwy 61. Bring your canoe, kayak or fishing boat and go explore! Judge C. Magney State Park is known for the Devils Kettle hike, and farther up Hwy 61 is High Falls, just before the Canadian border. The 14x28 cabin offers a poplar and hickory built kitchen for food preparation needs, with a faucet for cleaning, and a neat dining table to eat with space. Food and drinks can be kept cold in the solar powered fridge/freezer. 7 windows are provided for a look at nature along with blinds for privacy. This vintage commercial concrete dock was built in 1905 and brought passengers and cargo from Duluth before there were roads; passengers would then walk to this property where a boarding house and store stood. This property was settled by Ole Brunes and Hovland was named after his place of origin in Norway. On the property you can walk/snowshoe the trails, skip rocks, enjoy the outdoor fire pit and a wood-fired hot tub. Anglers can fish in the designated trout stream. Adventure seekers can launch your own SUP or canoe on a calm day, or even wade in the river or lake for a chilly swim. The second floor of the home has a spacious primary bedroom with french doors that open to a lake front balcony. An additional bedroom on the second floor has a queen bed and a loft; the loft can sleep one adult or two children. On the first level is a comfortable bedroom with a king bed. Each floor has a bathroom with shower. Relax in the living room next to the wood-burning fireplace and watch the massive ships go by. There is in-floor heating on the first floor making cold days extra cozy. The ultimate place to dine, or play games, is in the three-season room where you are surrounded by the beautiful lake and river views/sounds. Enjoy the propane grill (available May 1st-November 15th) on the deck and a fully stocked kitchen to whip up an amazing dinner. If you want to venture out for a meal we will recommend our favorite Cook County restaurants in Grand Marais, down the Gunflint Trail or at the majestic dining room of the Naniboujou Lodge (less than 5 miles away). What does "off-grid" look like at Points Unknown? The Points Unknown Guest Suite is located within our off-grid homestead, in Minnesota’s remote north woods, 35 minutes northeast of Grand Marais. We are located 7 miles from the conventional grid. Our energy comes from 16 solar panels mounted on the roof of our homestead. We have 24 batteries in which this solar energy is stored. On cloudy days, we have a propane generator that produces the energy used and stored. Propane, having a by-product of water, lessens our carbon footprint. We ask that our guests help us conserve our energy wherever possible. UPDATE: Power was brought up to Points Unknown through a federal grant. We’re thankful to be able to continue to use our solar energy system, however. There are no phone lines in our area but if you have AT&T, T-Mobile or Consumer, you will enjoy the ability to make phone calls freely as we do. You may also get a tiny bit of data. Our phone is available for emergencies if you do not have coverage. Serenity with connectivity! We now have Wifi! Our delicious drinking water comes from our own well. Our heat is in floor and is fed by an outdoor wood boiler. We have indoor plumbing! We ask that our guests help to conserve our precious resources by limiting the length and number of showers whenever possible. One shower per person, for a two night stay is what we request. Children •Our guest suite may not be suitable for some children under the age of 12 due to the multiple safety requirements associated with a kennel of sled dogs and the desire for general peace and quiet in our home. •Children must be attended by an adult at all times and not left to wander the common areas or property alone. You will pass through unfinished areas of our home to get to your perfectly finished and cozy accommodations with vast views of the woods out the patio door window and the big sky out of one of the three roof windows. Having unfinished space in your home is typical for our area so you'll be able to experience the local norm. The Guest Suite and private 3/4 bathroom are kept clean and tidy for our guests at all times. It is extremely unlikely, however, that the main part of our home which includes the porch, entry way, our private living quarters and the beeswax candle workshop will be free of dog hair, dirt and dust and some seasons are better than others. We really do "live" here along with our 20 sled pets, after all. You will get to see true life with Points Unknown and heck, we may surprise you and there won't be any dog hair, dust and dirt. GLAMOROUS-CAMPING on 4 levels. Pristine & Private. May you Unplug to Recharge & Get "LOST" to Find Yourself in 3 containers, 3 decks, screen porch, campfire pit all with panoramic views of Lake Superior, Chimney Rock, Isle Royal in distance on top 2 decks. Guests have entire place; 2 Night Min stay--Fri & Sat must be together; REQUESTS MUST INCLUDE: No WiFi, No Showers, Outhouse, BYO Water, & 1-week prior to arriving send message with appointment time for in-person check-in. No Pets Min-Age 25 The space Guests have the entire space to themselves. There are no houses or building in the view of the lake, only the pristine boreal north shore woods. The kitchen is small but has all the cooking and dining utensils needed. There is a dining table in the screen porch and there are many areas for eating on the 3 levels of decks. All bed and kitchen linens are supplied. Friday and Saturdays nights MUST be booked together. Memorial, Labor Day, and any other holiday that lands on Mondays must be booked for three night (Friday, Saturday, & Sunday). The entire place is off-grid, so guests are asked to turn off lights when not in use. The refrigerator/freezer is solar powered. There are 12V charging ports throughout the containers to recharge cell phone and laptop/notebook batteries, etc. (BTW-cell phone reception is not guaranteed, some guests can text, some can call out, and some can do neither; it all depends on your cell phone carrier.) Also, there are 120 Volt available when the inverter is turned on, and operating the solar information is covered during the mandatory in person 1/2 hour check-in. A generator is on the property for long periods of no sun to recharge the batteries. With no shower facilities, guests may bring adult cleansing wipes to take a sponge baths. Guests may also bring a bucket and water for showers that can be taken outdoors anywhere on the grounds or on the first floor deck except in the screen porch. Both kitchen and bedroom containers have propane heaters with thermostats to set the room temperatures. The Air-Chairs in the screen porch are rated to carry 250 lbs, and the hammock chairs on the top deck are rated to carry 225 lbs. We do not allow guns on the property. Please state in your booking request that you understand: 1-You'll bring all your own water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene 2-You understand that there is an Outhouse and No Shower facilities (i.e. no indoor plumbing) 3-You understand that there is no to poor cell service on premises 4-You will message with your arrival time 1 week prior to the day of your arrival. We check-in guests between 3:00 pm and a half an hour before sunset; the latest appointment time for checking-in during: May is 8:00, June is 8:30, July is 8:00, August is 7:30, September is 7:00, October is 6:15. (We have a 25 minute travel time to the containers so this is extremely important that you make a firm time so we can plan our events around that time.) Guest access Guests have access to all three containers, the screen porch, and the fire pit area. There is No Smoking and No Vaping in any of the containers or screen porch. Private Shoreline on Lake Superior

The Superior View House is your quiet escape to the North Shore. Located just 1 mile from access to Lake Superior, 1/2 mile from the Superior Hiking Trail and 10 minutes from Grand Marais this entire home is an excellent place to set up for a long weekend exploring the Northwoods. The cozy fireplace and large airy living room make for comfortable ways to spend the evenings or days when the whether isn't cooperating, otherwise the three outdoor decks and wood fired sauna are the places to be. The space The outdoor spaces are what makes this a truly special spot. Three different decks with furniture, a fire pit and clawfoot hot(or cold) tub that all face Lake Superior will make it hard to not spend time enjoying the outdoors. NOTE: The outdoor tub is shut down for the season on October 31. Guest access Guests have access to all of the indoor and outdoor spaces on the property throughout their stay.

This is a quaint sleeping studio bunkhouse located at Rustic Superior private campground, one mile off of Hwy 61 in Hovland, Minnesota. Includes futon, chairs, fire pit & panoramic view of the property and Lake Superior. Perfect for the individual or couple looking to get away from everything. This simple 12 x 12 foot north woods structure is well-maintained & clean. Penny's Peak is a visually secluded rustic campsite. Guests have full access to our groomed hiking trails and stunning wilderness. The space The sleeping studio is located within 20 miles of the Canadian border or Grand Marais (recognized as the Coolest Small Town in America). Resources in the area are abundant and include High Falls, Grand Portage, Arrowhead Trail, Gunflint Trail, Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Magney State Park, State boat launch, Superior National Forest, and many other endless rivers, trails and experiences to explore. The term ‘rustic’ is very much a cliché these days and from our perspective – over used. This is not rustic in a decorative sense, with pictures of moose on the blanket, bad coffee and scratchy towels. When we say rustic, we mean an outhouse, no running water, and a battery-operated lantern. You will be sheltered, yet still able to smell the birch and pine trees, lake breezes and great outdoors! You will be able to completely disconnect! Write, read, paint, get to know yourself better, and get to know someone else better, or simply commune with nature. No cell or wireless coverage here. Guest access Guests will have access to the full campgrounds, but are asked to respect the space and privacy of the four other campsites at Rustic Superior. Penny's Peak is a drive-up location all the way to the top parking area, and about a 100-foot walk to the sleeping cabin. Other things to note It has a propane gas heater for chilly evenings and guests must bring their own water, cooler, ice, etc. Guests bring own linens (likely sleeping bags) and towels and toiletries and clean unit upon departure for next guests. Cleaning supplies provided. There is no housekeeping, electricity and there are minimal supplies (garbage bags, matches, etc.). Firewood is provided for use only when fire restrictions are not in place and the winds are calm. There is no phone or television. There is a shed a short walk from the cabin with a green composting toilet. If you are looking to "Truly Escape"... this is the place. Winter reservations are not available at this time. Come experience simple off-the-grid living in Penny's Peak at Rustic Superior. The dining room is truly beautiful and unique, painted with inspiration from the ornate Cree Indigenous style. We consider visiting the Naniboujou dining hall a must-do during your stay. Just across the street, you will find Judge C.R. Magney State Park. With miles of hiking trails and several waterfalls, the park is a great place to visit. But, a state park in this area would not be complete without an ecological mystery of its own. That's where the Devil's Kettle Waterfall comes in. This waterfall splits into two parts- one part flows over the cliff's edge as waterfalls usually do. However, the other half falls into a mysterious formation known as The Devil's Kettle and simply disappears. To date, no one knows for certain exactly where the water goes, though many have tried to find out! If that wasn't enough, at Gem House you are just a short drive to many other North Shore attractions. The town of Grand Marais is just under 15 miles away. Grand Marais is home to many ma and pa style stores and restaurants not found elsewhere. Going up the shore you are just a short drive from Grand Portage which is home to both the Grand Portage National Monument and Grand Portage State Park (as well as the Grand Portage Casino!). There is so much to see and do you can easily stay at Gem House for a week or even two and not even see half of it! The space The timber frame cabin is located in Hovland MN, which is 30 minutes north of Grand Marais, near the Canadian border and Lake Superior. **Please Note**The solar power here is perfect for lighting and charging small essentials like your phone, but it’s not equipped for bigger devices like laptops. It’s all part of the off-grid charm—come ready to unplug and enjoy the simplicity! The cabin sleeps up to 3 (1 double bed & 1 sleeping cot). The cabin is a work of art, designed and built by a local carpenter and North House Folk School instructor.  This 16' x 16' space has everything you need to slow down and reconnect with yourself, your partner, and nature, making it your perfect North Shore getaway. Perfect for solo adventurers and couples willing to pack in and pack out drinking water and linens. There isn't running water or a regular cleaner. We do not charge a cleaning fee. Your ability to ‘Pay it Forward’ and leave the place as you found it is fundamental to maintaining an affordable experience in a healthy space for the next folks seeking a peaceful place to rest and rejuvenate. Please be kind and restock the wood bins and leave some dry kindling inside for the next guests. Remember to pack out your garbage and leave it tidy, or a 75$ penalty will be charged. WARNING - ROUGH ROAD CONDITIONS!!! The North Shore has experienced unprecedented snow melt and rainfall these past few springs that degraded the upper road. It is in a long queue for repairs. Spring/Summer/Fall Access: If there is no snow on the ground, access by vehicle is possible ONLY with a HIGH CLEARANCE vehicle. The road can be particularly tricky after heavy rainfall. Alternatively, with a NORMAL CLEARANCE vehicle, you can drop your supplies at the "Y" intersection at the bottom of the last hill and do a 10min walk up the last 200 yards. Winter Access: If there is snow on the ground, you will HAVE TO WALK up roughly 20 minutes from where the plowing ends, regardless of the type of vehicle. It is recommended to drop off your supplies where the plowing ends, and then drive back down for overnight parking. Use of a kids' sled is recommended to carry your supplies. If the road is icy or not well plowed, do not attempt to go up; we are not accountable for your towing. The winter walk up can be quite a challenge. Dress accordingly, come prepared, and recognize that the wood-fired heat can take a few hours for the cabin to warm up upon your arrival. We highly recommend you arrive in the daylight - it will make your way up to the cabin much nicer, as it is a beautiful walk up. Parking: There are two designated overnight parking areas located approx. 200 yards after you turn onto Tower Rd. There is an open area on the right-hand side (north side) of the maintained road, and there is a second parking area on the left-hand side just a few yards up. From here, the walk-up is approximately 1.2 miles or 30-45min, mostly uphill. You will get hot Trust us... it is truly worth it! Other things to note Network Service: There is no wifi at the cabin. Towering white pines greet you as you arrive at this rustic destination. A short walk along a dirt path takes you to the door of this off-grid yurt. Custom-built by the owners, this cozy yurt offers a simple place to sleep, cook and relax - all less than 20 minutes from the quaint harbor town of Grand Marais. The single-room yurt has a full-size bed and a very comfortable pull out couch to spaciously sleep 2 or cozily sleep 4. The composting toilet is a short walk (30 feet) from the yurt. The space Raven Sky Yurt is located on a six-acre parcel that is also home to the host family. The yurt is very private with devoted parking. The space: •	20 minutes from Grand Marais •	Walkable to the Superior Hiking Trail (10-15 minutes) and public access to the shore of Lake Superior (20 minutes). •	Private firepit •	There is no wi-fi access and cell phone service is spotty. Do not expect to have service with Verizon. T-Mobile may have limited service. •	There is no grid-tied electricity. There is a mobile battery power unit that runs a room fan and lights, and can charge small devices such as a phone or computer. The off-grid yurt is equipped with: •	Wood stove for heating (firewood provided) •	Lights •	Room fan •	Propane refrigerator/freezer •	Sink with foot pump operation and bucket drain •	Ten gallons of potable water for washing, drinking and cooking •	Two-burner propane stove (no oven) •	Dishes, cutlery, pots, pans, cutting board, kettle •	Kitchen table and chairs •	Double bed with linens and blankets and bug net •	Queen-sized pull-out sofa (no linens or blankets) •	Composting toilet (located in a small tent 30 feet from the yurt. This tall toilet has a step to access it and no handrail. May be challenging for somebody with mobility constraints) Guest access Guests are welcome to the entire yurt area including two private parking spots and a private fire pit. Other things to note 1. Our steep road can be icy and slippery during cold months. A 4/AWD vehicle with good tires is highly recommended. If you can't make it up the road, you are fully responsible for removing your vehicle and freeing access immediately. 2. The Northwoods is full of wildlife and bugs. Please be respectful of the animals you may see on the property. Spring and summer are heavy bug seasons, and you will likely have to deal with mosquitos, black flies, no-see-ums, possible spiders, and cluster flies. The yurt has window screens and a magnetic door screen as well as a bug net hung over the bed. 3. Temperatures in the yurt can be difficult to regulate. The space has a lot of solar gain and may be quite warm on sunny days. Evenings on the North Shore generally cool off, so be prepared to keep windows open. There are no fans in this off-grid yurt.
