The space In addition to the home, there is 100 feet of lake shore located directly across the street (separated by HWY 169) for guests to enjoy. This beach is private to our guests and not public, however as a reminder, it is shared with our neighboring vacation rental that shares the driveway. Porch: There is a spacious porch located on the front of the home with a view of the lake. Main house: Renovated and open concept layout, kitchen with utensils, dinnerware, pots/pans and other kitchen basics. Refrigerator/freezer, dining room table, living room with seating and TV w/Roku. There are two public access points for boats — one just north of Deerwood on Voyageur Highway and the other being opposite this home in Crosby. The lake itself is 1,103 acres with average water clarity of 20 feet, which the state classifies as "very good." The deepest part is 65', but 32% of the lake is 15 feet or less. It's a popular recreational lake with good fishing — walleye, pike, bass and crappies. MAIN FLOOR: Open sight lines from front to back with tons of seating options! The main level of this rambler features a kitchen, dining and living room that are all connected so groups can enjoy separate spaces while still being connected for conversation. All three spaces enjoy views of the lake through a huge picture window. The fully-stocked kitchen features stainless steel appliances with a breakfast bar and seating for four. A Keurig Duo machine (individual cups and traditional coffee pot) with some K-cup options will be provided. The 65-inch smart TV is mounted above the fireplace for use with your personal streaming accounts. Other things to note THE LEGEND OF BENJAMIN SUTTER Dear guests, Benjamin Sutter grew up in Deerwood, Minnesota in the mid 1800s. He was the only child of a cattle farmer. The Sutter family was close-knit. They worked hard, but thoroughly enjoyed their simple lifestyle. Their home was a warm, loving place, which provided Benjamin with a loving, stable foundation for the challenges he would face in adulthood. At an early age, Benjamin started collecting rocks. He especially enjoyed gathering and identifying rocks while he was out in the field with his father. When young Benjamin wasn’t doing chores or schoolwork, he would often explore the surrounding area searching for rocks in lakes, creeks, and caves. By the time Benjamin was 16, he had determined that he wanted to become a geologist. In 1878, Benjamin left home to study geology at the University of Minnesota, which at that time was located in St. Anthony Falls. It was there that he met Virginia Larsen. The daughter of a medical doctor, Virginia grew up in Duluth in a splendid home overlooking Lake Superior. In the same way that Benjamin loved rocks, Virginia loved trees; and like Benjamin, Virginia decided at an early age to study that which she loved. Virginia was among the first women to study science at the University of Minnesota graduating with a degree in arboriculture and forestry in 1882. In 1883, Benjamin and Virginia were married and moved to Burlington, Minnesota where Benjamin took a position working as geologist for the Burlington Mining Company, which was mostly prospecting for corundum at that time. Virginia worked part-time for the Civilian Conservation Corps identifying and cataloging trees in the forests northwest of Burlington. Benjamin and Virginia traveled often to see their parents in Duluth and Deerwood. In 1886, Benjamin and Virginia built a small cabin on Sunset Lake, on the land that we now call Sutter’s Point. Unable to have children of their own, in 1887 Benjamin and Virginia adopted Bear Songetay at the age of 3, after Bear’s parents died tragically in a fire. Growing up in northern Minnesota, Bear’s favorite place soon became Sutter’s Point, where he often spent summers and holidays with his grandparents. It was there that he learned to catch and prepare fish. Bear Sutter later became a well-known fishing guide in Central and Northern Minnesota. Given that Benjamin had grown up in Deerwood, he was familiar with the geological characteristics of the area. After the discovery of large iron ore deposits in Hibbing and Grand Rapids, Benjamin began to wonder if iron ore was present underground in the Deerwood area. There was no evidence of iron ore deposits above ground, but during the spring of 1892 Benjamin decided to do some magnetic testing. His preliminary tests provided strong evidence that iron ore was beneath the ground approximately 10 miles north of Sutter’s Point. Benjamin was hired by the Erie Mining Company to work full-time on prospecting for iron ore near Deerwood. In 1893, the Sutter family moved to Deerwood and took up residence at Sutter’s Point. The Erie Mining Company began making plans to mine the iron ore that Benjamin discovered. The first shipments of iron ore, which happened to be rich in magnesium, were exported from the mines in 1902. The presence of magnesium in the iron ore resulted in very hard steel. This steel played an important role in World War I. The Sutter family was well compensated for Benjamin’s work, and yet increasing levels of conflict began to well up in the hearts of Benjamin, Virginia, and even Bear. Thousands of acres of beautiful woodlands were completely deforested to dig mines. In addition, native American families were displaced and resettled on reservations. The Sutter’s were filled with remorse over the consequences of Benjamin’s discovery of iron ore. Benjamin and Virginia devoted the rest of their lives to healing the land they had grown to love and cherish. They used their wealth to fund programs for the protection and replanting of Minnesota's forests. They invested in efforts to protect wildlife in the area. They also gave their time and money to help provide education and vocational training for native Americans. The hearts of Benjamin, Virginia and Bear would be overwhelmed with joy to learn of the redemptive transformation that has taken place in Crosby, Ironton, Deerwood area–the filling of the mines with pristine waters, the growth of new trees, and recreational opportunities that enable thousands of visitors per year to grow in their love and respect for nature. It’s in that spirit that Sutter’s Point was established as a vacation rental property. Just as the land around the mines has experienced healing, it is our hope that Sutter’s point will be a place of healing for all those who visit. My Grandparents (Geneva and Lyle) originally purchased the 2 lots the home is on in late 1970. It was to be their "up north retirement home." Construction was completed in 1972. My grandfather, Lyle (VP of advertising at Green Giant), was unfortunately diagnosed with leukemia and died in the fall of 1974. My Grandmother (Japanese code breaker during WW2!) continued to summer there until she was physically unable to (in her 80's). She passed away in her 90's in 2020 at which point the family needed to decide what to do with the property. It meant so much to us growing up that we needed to figure out a way to keep it in our family so we ended up purchasing it from the family in 2022. This brings us to today where we share this amazing property with our guests (we rent it out to make ends meet to keep it in the family, we are NOT real estate investors looking to capitalize on short term rentals), we sincerely hope you love it as much as we do/have over our lives! Details: Clearwater Lake is home to 79 private residences of which only 12 are year-round residences, the rest of the lake shore (approx 1/3) is undeveloped and owned by a youth/retreat camp (Clearwater Forest), this lends itself to being a very quiet and "private like" lake. Back to the house and around the side deck you will find steps to the lower bedroom deck, and still more stairs to the front lawn area. (There is another entrance to the front lawn from the kitchen deck on the other side of the house.) Down another set of steps landscaped with railroad ties you will find the lake lawn area with a wood swing. Taking a stroll down a mowed path you will find the lakefront area with canoe and kayaks and a small lawn, as well as the dock. From the lawn there is a small entrance to the lake in a break between a boulder wall. The lake bottom is sandy/rocky and good for swimming. There is a 'swimming hole' -type area between the shore and dock. Area: Nestled among dozens of beautiful lakes the area is famous for, Falconhurst is conveniently located within minutes of Ruttger's resort with golf, gourmet dining, a convenience store, and other entertainment options. Nearby Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area is famous for mountain biking with over 25 miles of riding spread across 800 acres of paved and singletrack trails. Brainerd is a short drive west and Grand Casino Mille Lacs is a short drive south. The towns of Deerwood, Crosby ('antique capital of the Brainerd lakes area'), and Ironton are just minutes away. Maximum of 16 guests. The space This lakefront home boasts many family-friendly spaces complete with a pool table and bunk room with a Lego table! Shady Crest is a two level home that sleeps 16 people. There are 5 bedrooms plus the bunk/Lego room and 3.5 baths. Everyone has a bed - 5 king beds and 10 twins. Enjoy the open floor plan, gas fireplace, a wall of windows, and deck looking over the lake. It is a quiet, peaceful property at the end of the road, next to the woods, and on the lake. The yard contains a small apple orchard—late summer and early fall guests are welcome to pick and enjoy the apples! Fully stocked kitchen. To make traveling a bit easier with young children, we have two pack-and-plays, a highchair, 3 booster chairs, stools in the bathrooms, a baby gate, and many toys (including Duplos, Little People and Magformers). Guests have access to a full sized washer and dryer. Outdoors, you will have a taste of MN wilderness. Fox, turkeys, cats, racoons, deer, skunks, and the occasional bear will visit the backyard. The lake is great for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Our kids enjoy catching sunny and crappies right from the dock. Kayaks and a canoe are stored near the lake, while paddles and an assortment of life jackets are stored in the garage (May - Sep). Many outdoor games are available, including ladder ball, beanbags (cornhole), giant Jenga, giant Yahtzee, and more. The bonfire pit with wood is available year round to enjoy some s’mores overlooking the lake! The deck features a 6-person table and a gas grill. We have a spare propane tank onsite. If you run out, please let me know so I can give you access to the spare tank. Home is located one mile from the "18 Run Trail," which allows easy access to many county trails on snowmobiles. There is plenty of room in the driveway and garage to store snowmobiles and trailers when not in use. Guests with electric vehicles can request access to the detached garage, which houses a 40A Clipper Creek Level 2 EV charger. Guest access Guests have access to the entire house, yard, and attached garage with the exception of the locked owner’s closets (2) & utility room. The three car attached garage has many yard toys and is available for parking. The detached garage is not typically available for guests. It will be made available upon request to use the EV charger or in the case of inclement weather. Other things to note Kayaks, canoe, and dock will be available May - September. Please note that this house is in a quiet neighborhood. It is a private dirt road with a speed limit of 15 mph. Please be respectful of our neighbors who are permanent residents. Grave Lake is a private lake with no public boat launch. We have kayaks and a canoe for guest use. We have great swimming. The water starts out 10- 12 inches deep (no real beach) and gets gradually deeper. It is 3.5 - 4 feet deep at the end of the dock. The bottom is hard sand with rocks and occasional weeds. The water in Grave Lake is tea colored due to tannins in the water. The tannins seep into the water from the roots of the trees around the lake and stain the water. It is safe to swim and boat. The water indoors is treated to remove tannins and iron to prevent damage to laundry. Edit: Aug 2026 - with the hot, dry weather this summer we experienced an algae bloom on the north side of the lake including around our dock. The DNR recommends not swimming with the algae present. There is a sandbar straight out from us (near the shore and a small creek) this is a great, weed and algae free place to play. Please stay off the neighbors dock near the sandbar. There is plenty of room to park your boat if you would like to explore nearby lakes. Nokay Lake is just across Hwy 18. Upper South Long and Bay Lake are also nearby. Mille Lacs, Gull, and Pelican are popular options but a bit of a longer drive. Bay Lake Marine is an option several guests have used for a pontoon rental day trip. The exterior of the property is monitored by three cameras. One monitoring the front entrances of the home (located on the detached garage), one monitoring driveway (located on front of attached garage) and one monitoring the rear entrance to home (located on back of attached garage). All cameras record audio and video.

The space This cozy 1,000 square foot cottage has 2 bedrooms (one with a queen bed and the other with adult-sized XL bunk bed), the sunroom has a full-sized pullout futon bed for another 2 people, and there is a pull-out couch bed in the living room for one adult or two kids. Two bathrooms - one with a 2-person jacuzzi tub and the other with standing shower. Guest access All parts of our nearly 30-acre property are accessible for guests, including outbuildings. PLEASE exercise caution when exploring the property due to the numerous marshy and overgrown areas, and there are a few ponds that are pretty to look at but not good for swimming or wading (kayaks or canoes are welcome). There is a deer stand on the property for hunting, with an adjacent WMA (called the Hesitation Wildlife Management Area) if you wish to hunt beyond the boundary of our land.
